There be Pirates

East Carolina is not a good football team. Period.

Nothing against those purple pirates, but their defeat of both Virginia Tech and West Virginia is simply a statement of the poor quality of college football going on in the Virginia’s (For further proof, refer to the kick in the throat that Virginia received from Southern Cal last week). Am I writing a blog right now that’s sole purpose is to bash Hokies, Mountaineers, and Cavaliers? No. I only have one bone to pick.

BCS busters are a waste of time! EXCLAMATION POINT!

I’m really sick of teams getting ranked because they win a couple of games against BCS opponents. It’s almost as ridiculous as Ohio State being ranked in the top 5 for going undefeated in the Big 10. ALMOST. Teams like Fresno State, BYU, Appalachian State, TCU, and Utah are a lot of fun to watch. Especially when they make the big boys sweat, and even when (In Boise State’s case a couple of years ago) they beat the big boys. BUT these tiny teams are nothing but novelties.

Does that mean we shouldn’t let these cheap snow globes play the big guys? Question mark?

I’m not saying that. What I AM saying is that they need to stay out of the rankings. They also need to stay out of BCS bowls. I’m afraid that the turd Oklahoma dropped against Boise State two years ago has fed the “Cinderella Story” in the college football postseason. We need to leave that to college basketball, and you know it. It’s great in a tournament, because you can route for that David from down the street to beat the Goliath of a major university. But there is no tournament in college football, and no true Cinderella’s. Only one team that pulled the upset in a long line of molly-whoppings. I think we’re doomed to see more of what we saw in last year’s Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. Big Nasties like UGA and USC beating the snot bubbles out of incredibly inferior teams. Simply because of how nifty it’ll be if they were to loose to the underdogs. That means we’ll get to see a lot of un-entertaining football games in the near future.

That’s a bunch of crap. True statement.

PS: Knowshon Moreno (The heisman worthy running back from UGA) literally jumped over a defender in the Central Michigan game today. It was outstanding. ESPN didn’t even show it in the highlights tonight. “East Coast bias” my ass. Either the state of Georgia is the smallest media market in the world or one of the cameramen in Sanford Stadium forgot to turn his camera on. Piss-poor, ESPN. Piss poor.

“terd” is actually spelled “turd”. And you ought to submit some of this stuff to a larger arena. I totally agree on the Cinderella stuff. But I did actually see the Knowshon jump on ESPN during the FL/MIA game.

You’re on fire! I keep looking at that image of you yelling. Hilarious.

a suggestion: how about adding some youtube flair? You could insert a text link to Knowshon Moreno
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFtszXrC0R0
or embed the entire clip.

Maybe it’s that all of you SEC/Georiga lovers need to wake up. Yes the SEC is having a good couple of seasons, but if you all are true FOOTBALL fans, you’d realize that there are other quality teams outside of south. I agree Ohio State probably doesn’t deserve to be in the top 5, however until they loose they’ll stay there—that’s just the system works and until we have tournament play it’s not worth arguing. Penn State is clearly the better Big 10 team this year with a stacked team, yet they’ll have to crawl up the rankings just like how Georgia had to do last year…and I recall a lot of crying amongst the “Dawgs” faithful the past couple of seasons… So now that you’re on top, you can’t let it lie, you just need to keep digging at the system that is now working in your favor. Boo Hoo Knoshon didn’t get any coverage… Maybe it’s because there were other great games to cover besides Central Michigan vs Georiga? I watched most of the UGA game and there is no question they are a pretty good team, but who really knows if they’re better than USC, PSU, Oklahoma, Missouri, Wisconsin, Florida, or the numerous other untested teams even within your own conference.

I agree that Virginia teams stink right now and have been overrated for years, but did you watch the WV – ECU game? While I don’t think Fresno St. is the real deal, ECU is. They are a very motivated well put together team that deserves to be ranked. Probably not within the top, but they did beat two BCS teams and kicked their asses. If the ranking systems were really accurate they should be ranked #1 because no one else has played the caliber they have this season. (even if that caliber is questionable, but we won’t know that for a couple of more games)

Now about the Big Ten… yes the conference has been laying stinkers in a couple of big bowl games as of late, but that’s not the fault of the teams, it’s the fault of the conference admin who think it’s acceptable for their students to actually study for finals instead of playing ball later in the season. I guarantee that if Ohio State hadn’t had 6 weeks off before their last game, it would have been a much different game. Would they have won…who knows, but I do know that teams cannot take 4-6 weeks off and still play consistent… If anything it’s remarkable that we win any game and I think shows just how good the conference is to do as well as they do. As a Big Ten fan living deep in SEC country I am extremely tired of saying they can’t keep up with the SEC. If that was the case, then how is it that the Big Ten always ranks in the top 1 or 2 every year for god knows how long on Draft Day?… I guess you’re now saying that all Pro teams don’t know what they’re doing either? No one wants tournament play more than Big Ten fans…while our schools rack up the big bowl dollars we’re not saving face… I also recall Iowa who is not a top caliber team handily beating LSU and Florida in recent bowl games? Isn’t that your cream of the crop?

So rant and rant, but until UGA doesn’t do their usual seasonal choke, you really don’t have a leg to stand on.

Whoa whoa whoa. I’m no UGA fan. I just think that a guy jumping over another human being deserves to be in the top ten over the trash I’d just seen on tv before that post. Now that that is out in the open, let’s get to your Big 10/11 arguments. There is no doubt in my mind that the best QB in the nation is playing for Oklahoma in Sam Bradford, the best runningback in the nation might be among USC’s backups, and (arguably) the best linebacker playing college football is a Buckeye. I’m no slouch in the “FOOTBALL fandom” department, but you need to accept the truth. The best football conference in the nation is the SEC. Four teams (LSU, UF, Auburn, and UGA) could win the BCS this year. Maybe this’ll change as early as next year, but Big 10/11 apologists can’t change that fact.

You also can’t use “our players don’t play for a long time” as an excuse either. It’s only one week longer than teams who actually win conference championship games, and Southern Cal has had to do the same thing.

And please please please, when you’re trying to bash SEC bowl losses, try to mention any of the 10 other teams in the conference instead of the two teams that happened to drop kick the Buckeyes in the back of the head the last two years in the big game. Maybe Georgia’s embarrassment against at the hands of WV or… well no other’s really come to mind. Yes, Drew Tate was a scrappy-ass QB that knew how to get after it, but during Florida’s loss, LSU was busy beating the Sooners for the National title. And that year LSU lost to Iowa, UGA beat Wisconsin and Auburn won their BCS bowl (after an undefeated season in the SEC. But Minnesota did beat Alabama. So ya’ll had that going for you.

All I’m saying about ECU is that they’re not deserving of the hype they’re being given because the teams they’re beating shouldn’t have been ranked in the first place. I’m strongly against pre season rankings anyway, and to say they’re in the top 15 now for beating an awfully over hyped Va Tech and upsetting WV, I think it’s crazy talk. If there were no rankings now, all we’d be taking from this is that ECU is an over achiever, Va Tech is trash, and WV has some respect to earn back. Nothing more.

The best Quarterback right now is in Missouri…but we’ll see in a couple of weeks when they play each other.

I’m sorry, last I looked the SEC championship is two weeks after the last Big Ten game, sometimes three or four depending on the Big Ten team. USC and the SEC play a week to two weeks and sometimes three beyond most Big Ten season closers. My point is playing two to three weeks longer (even one) makes a difference. Until you’re put in that position you can’t argue against it.

I agree the SEC is pretty dam good right now, but there are other conferences outside of the SEC that have good quality teams. Every year it’s a different conference and I get tired of how those who rank teams get caught up on a conference and tend to ignore the others. To say South Carolina is good this year is a joke (they never should have been ranked)…and that Alabama is good enough to be 11th? (Clemson is just bad) and all this hype about how Ole Miss will be good this year and Arkansas, Tennessee, Miss St, Vandy are good… give me a break. The SEC has just as many cupcakes as any conference. Georgia, Florida, LSU and Auburn do look good, but so does Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Penn State, Wisconsin (we’ll see about OSU next week), USC, Cal, Oregon and even ECU.

To say your four are any stronger than any other four is fullish.

I’d pit ECU against any of the above right now and I bet they’d make any game close. No one else has played anyone good enough to argue differently.

I just can’t buy it. I can’t even let the ECU bandwagon into my neighborhood. I feel like they’re a good story about a mediocre group of kids playing well above their pay grade. Does that qualify them to be ranked amoung the best?

I think my big arguement is that the rankings are flawed. Now that ECU is ranked, they’re only ranked for beating unrankable teams. It’s like this vicious circle of hypocrisy. Va Tech is ranked, they lose to an unranked team and become unranked, then that same team beats another ranked team, but WV doesn’t fall out of the top 25 because they lost to a (now) ranked team. Doesn’t that mean Va Tech should make a reappearance? I mean, their only loss is to a top 15 team…

I think you could make an arguement for any of the small schools that go undefeated to be in the BCS rankings, but in the end I think they need to simply have their own rankings. Because (much like the whole SEC vs everyone else argument) How can you value their wins over BCS losses? What makes wins over Deleware and Saint Mary Mother of Watcha McCall-it better than a hard fought loss to Southern Cal? How can a team with 2 losses to the likes of Georgia and Florida get cheated out of a bowl by the Division 3 quadruple A upstart team with a great story and a hard knock coach?

Give them their own party to crash, because conjecture isn’t going to make their murder on the football team at the hands of a much better opponent any more fun to watch.

Good stuff… I agree for the most part. ECU is playing above their ability, but that’s what makes it great. If teams actually played to their ability, Florida and Miami would never loose. What’s makes ECU a great story is that it proves that a group of mediocre players can come together and as one and play good tough football. So the problem is, where do they lie amongst the big boys. The problem is the media is always looking for a ECU and now they have 5. Boise luckily looks to be out this year. Hopefully Fresno St will loose this weekend. And Utah and BYU play each other at the end of the season, so hopefully we’re looking at just 2 in the end. Though I would rather watch any of them over any Little East team.

Keep in mind however that Football is bigger than ever and every collage is looking to make a buck from it and every high school player actually thinks they’ll have a shot at the big leagues. There’s not enough room for them all within the major’s so they’ll have to go into the minor conferences and every year a good coach will be able to get enough of the scrapes to put together a quality team… South Florida is no different to me than ECU. Just because they moved up to the big boys (or so called, I think the Mtn West maybe stronger than the Big East) it doesn’t mean they’re a quality team…. The sports writers and voters will always put at least one team in the rankings from every conference even if they don’t deserve it. I can say ECU looks a thousand times better than SC, Vandy or SF… hell for that matter even OSU. (though I think Tressel will put soemthing out of his ahole this weekend)

The core of the system is flawed. The AP and Coache’s polls, the computer rankings all don’t work because too many people who shouldn’t vote are allowed to vote. Conferences heads and the media will always influence voters and will always F@#$ it up, which in the end will even screw up a playoff system.

Again good stuff. Keep it up. As you can see, you’re keeping me coming back. No one in the office really talks sports except for a die hard Auburn fan, which means between us, it’s like talking through a brick wall.

I know you’ve been watching Moreno all season, but have you seen any runs by Greene? I know you’re not a big 10 fan, but this kid has the skills. Being a huge Earl Campbell fan, he reminds me a lot of the Tyler Rose. check it out yourself.
